We all know its 2020: a new year, a new decade, a new day… and for me, its somehow an honour to be a part of the 20’s. Perhaps its my passion for the 1920’s prohibition cocktail scene, or the fashion scene headed by the likes of Gabrielle Coco Chanel and Elsa Schiaparelli. Or maybe its the gothic-style women’s makeup trends with overdrawn dark lips in Rouge-Noir-esque tones and perfect eyebrow lines. It could be that the 1920’s were the era for authors like Ernest Hemingway (highly recommend his cocktail too), F.Scott Fitzgerald and T.S. Eliot. Or, it could be the idea that so many of our grandfathers or great-grandfathers fought in the First World War (1914-1918).
The 1920’s were a time of global change: technological advances previously unseen, communication developments allowing for the beginning of globalization (although there are arguments that it begin in the 1400’s), and a rebellious time that was cause for copious amounts of Champagne consumption!
As decades go though, the beginning of the 1920’s was preceded by a terrible war, and the end of the 1920’s brought the Great Depression. Sandwiched in between such tragic times is one of the most beautiful, romantic, luxurious eras of its century, and here we are today, on this day, 100 years later in 2020.
I’m looking forward to exploring the history of the 1920’s with you in this blog detailing the cocktails, the fashion, the architecture and home decor; the art, the trends and the now-and-then of our lifestyles.
I sincerely hope that you enjoy what I’ve got planned to share with you in 2020.
